CONWAY, Ark. - The Freed-Hardeman Lion baseball team came up just short Friday, as they opened their series at Central Baptist College with a 3-1 loss.

Brian Moreno (5-3) picked up the win for Central Baptist after working 7 and 2/3 innings and allowing just five hits while striking out nine. Brandon Guske (5-7) suffered the loss for the Lions after working eight innings and allowing eight hits and three earned runs while striking out five.

Despite the loss, the Lions received solid contribution from Bryce Lester, who led the Lions at the plate, ending the day going 1-for-4 with a double. Joe Leatherwood was also solid at the plate, as he went 1-for-4 on the day and contributed the lone RBI for FHU in the loss.

The Mustangs (22-20, 9-11 AMC) got things started early with one run in the bottom of the third inning, as Josh Hibbard reached base on a single to right field and scored later in the inning off a wild pitch by Guske to put CBC up 1-0.

The Lions (24-17, 9-12 AMC); however, kept the Mustangs quiet throughout the next five innings, as Guske allowed just three hits and no runs. FHU; on the other hand, would not stay silent, as they finally broke through with some offense of their own in the top of the seventh inning. Collin Baber scored the lone run for the Lions in the inning after pinch running for Collin McPherson and scoring on a single to deep right field by Wes Brooks to even things up at one apiece.

However, the Mustangs would find their bats again in the bottom of the eighth inning, as two more runs crossed the plate, courtesy of a two-run blast by Santez Richardson to give CBC the 3-1 lead, which would be just enough to secure the win.

With the loss, the Lions fall to 24-17 on the season and 9-12 in conference play. Central Baptist College improves to 22-20 on the season and 9-11 in AMC play with the win.

UP NEXT: The Lions continue their series at Central Baptist Saturday with a double header slated for 12:00 PM at Victory Field in Conway, Ark.
