HANNIBAL, Mo. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion softball team split its twin-bill with Hannibal-LaGrange Saturday, as they suffered a 1-0 loss in the opening game, but followed it up with a 7-0 shutout win in the nightcap. With the split, the Lady Lions improve to 19-8 on the season and 17-3 in conference play.

In addition to picking up a solid win, the Lady Lions also moved up to second place in the AMC standings, as Williams Baptist College suffered two losses to Columbia College in Columbia, Mo. this afternoon.

Despite the loss in the opening game, Makenzie Prince (8-3) was solid in the circle, as she allowed just five hits and one earned run while striking out six. Although FHU pounded out seven hits in the game, including a triple by Abbi Gooch, the Lady Lions could not push any runs across and fell 1-0.

The Trojans (17-19, 9-9 AMC) needed just one inning to secure the win, as they pushed one run across in the bottom of the first inning. McKenzie Marshall got the inning started for Hannibal LaGrange in the leadoff spot with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a passed ball by Savannah McGraw. Marshall would cross the plate later in the inning following an RBI single by Haley Zeier to give the Trojans all the cushion they would need to pick up the 1-0 win.

The Lady Lions (19-8, 17-3 AMC); however, would not let the opening game loss define the afternoon, as they pounded out 14 hits and pushed across seven runs to pick up a shutout of their own in the nightcap.

Mallory Spurlock (8-2) was brilliant in the circle in the second game, as she worked a complete game and allowed just five hits while striking out an impressive 12 batters.

Kaylyn Graham was solid at the plate once again for the Lady Lions, as she went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI to aid FHU in pulling away for good. Annaka Baxter also found success at the plate, as she went 3-for-5 in the game with an RBI while Lilly Bombard contributed a triple in the win.

The Lady Lions did a majority of their damage in the top of the second inning, as five runs crossed the plate. Lilly Bombard started the inning with a bang, as she pounded out a triple and scored off an RBI single by Morgan Warren to give FHU the 1-0 lead. Warren would score the second run in the inning following an RBI single by Abbi Gooch.

Caitlyn Carter would also cross the plate in the inning, courtesy of an RBI single by Annaka Baxter while Kaylyn Graham pounded out a double to center field to score two more runs and put the Lady Lions up 5-0.

FHU pushed two more insurance runs across in the top of the seventh inning, as Hannah Wright and Caitlyn Carter both crossed the plate to give the Lady Lions all the cushion they would need to split the series with the Trojans.

UP NEXT: The Lady Lions are back in action at home Tuesday, April 18th, as they host Cumberland University for a double header slated for 2:00 PM at Morgan Stadium.
