Lady Lions end regular season with double header loss at Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion softball team concluded the regular season Thursday with a double header loss to No. 3 Columbia College, as they suffered a 5-0 loss in the opening game and an 8-0 loss in the nightcap.

Mallory Spurlock (9-3) suffered the loss in the opener after working 2 and 1/3 innings and allowing three hits and three earned runs while striking out two. Hannah Wright provided 3 and 2/3 innings of relief and allowed four hits while striking out three.

Paxton Welch (16-4) picked up the win for Columbia College (38-5, 23-1 AMC) after limiting FHU (21-10, 19-5 AMC) to just two hits while striking out four. Caitlyn Carter and Annaka Baxter were the only Lady Lion players to reach base in the opener, as Welch issued no walks and gave up just two hits.

The Cougars continued to roll in nightcap, as Lauren McCroskie (19-1) picked up the win after working six solid innings and allowing just three hits while striking out three. 

Makenzie Prince (8-4) suffered the loss for FHU after giving up seven hits and four earned runs in three innings of work. Mallory Spurlock provided 2 and 1/3 innings of relief and gave up four hits and one earned run while striking out one. 

Despite the loss, Annaka Baxter was solid at the plate, as she went 2-for-3 with a double to contribute a majority of FHU's offense in the loss.

With the double header loss, the Lady Lions fall to 21-10 on the season and 19-5 in conference play. Columbia College improves to 38-5 on the season and 23-1 in AMC play with the sweep.
