Brooks explodes for three homeruns in 17-1 pounding of Mustangs

HENDERSON, Tenn. - To say the Freed-Hardeman Lion baseball team found their stride Saturday would be an understatement, as they pounded out 20 hits and five homeruns over Central Baptist College to take a 17-1 victory.

With the victory, the Lions move to 32-22 on the season and advance to play the winner of the Lindenwood University Belleville and Missouri Baptist University game being played Saturday at 1:00 PM at Carnes Field.

Landon Sewell (5-1) picked up the win in the match-up after working a complete game and striking out 11 while allowing just nine hits. Caulin Cragle (4-5) suffered the loss for Central Baptist (30-24) after working three innings and allowing eight hits and nine earned runs while striking out three.

Wes Brooks led the Lions at the plate, as he went 4-for-5 with three homeruns and nine RBI to give the Mustang pitching staff fits the entire day. Aden Campbell and Houston Looser joined the homerun fire show with one each, as Campbell went a perfect 5-for-5 with four RBI whle Looser went 3-for-4.

The Lions got things started with a bang, as five runs crossed the plate in the top of the first inning, courtesy of a three-run homerun by Aden Campbell and a two-run shot by Wes Brooks to give FHU the early lead.

Brooks would strike again for the Lions in the top of the third inning with three more runs in the top of the third inning, as he connected on a three-run shot to left field to give FHU an 8-0 lead.

The Lions would extend their lead further in the top of the fourth inning, as three more runs crossed the plate following a pair of doubles by Bryce Lester and Wes Brooks to score two followeed by an RBI single by Aden Campbell would make it 11-0.

FHU added another run in the top of the fifth inning following a sacrifice fly by Bryce Lester to score Colin Baber to give FHU the 12-0 lead. Five more runs would cross the plate in the top of the sixth inning following Brooks' third homerun of the day, this time in the form of a three-run variety to put FHU up 15-0. Two more runs were added later in the inning following a two-run shot by Houston Looser  to put FHU up 17-0.

Central Baptist would get on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning, as L'Donta Howard crossed the plate, but it would not be enough, as Sewell shut the Mustangs down for the remainder of the game to secure the 17-1 win for the Lions.

UP NEXT: The Lions are back in action Saturday at 7:00 PM as they face the winner of Missouri Baptist University and Lindenwood-Belleville being played at 1:00 PM.
