CENTERVILLE, Tenn. - It might have taken a playoff for things to be decided, but in the end the Freed-Hardeman Lion golf team secured a first place team finish at the Riley Cup Invitational while Senior golfer Easton Lavelle took home a first place individual finish.

The event; however, would require more than 18 holes to be decided, as Freed-Hardeman and Martin Methodist College both finished with a team score of 304 to force a playoff, where the Lions were able to finish one stroke ahead of the Redhawks to secure the win.

The highlight of the team playoff involved FHU freshman and Centerville native Dalton Thomasson hitting the flag stick to secure a likely birdie putt. The tee shot came moments after Martin Methodist golfer Tyler Turpin hit his tee shot near the hole as well, setting up his birdie putt. Thomasson finished the hole with a birdie, which proved valuable as the Lions secured the win by a one-shot margin.

The individual winner would also take a playoff to be decided, as Lavelle and Huber along with Walker Gordon from Martin Methodist College would head back out to the Par-3 13th hole to determine the first place individual winner, as each finished their round shooting a 4-over 74.

The playoff would be narrowed to two golfers following the first playoff hole, as Lavelle and Gordon each secured their par putts while Huber finished the playoff with a bogey. However, the second playoff belonged to Lavelle, as Gordon would bogey the hole setting up Lavelle's par putt for the win.

Easton Lavelle and Hudson Huber paced the Lions, as both fired a 4-over 74 along with Walker Gordon of Martin Methodist College who finished atop the leaderboard. Dalton Thomasson followed close behind with a 77 seventh place finish while Ben Burnette shot a 79 and secured a top 10 finish. Lance Moore rounded out the scoring for the Lions with a 16th place finish after shooting an 82.

UP NEXT: The FHU Golf teams are back in action Thursday, September 21st, as they host Bethel University and Blue Mountain College for a tri-match to be held at the Chickisaw Golf Course in Henderson, Tenn.
