HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman soccer teams opened conference play Friday night, as they played host to a tough Columbia College team. Despite playing hard the entire night, the Lady Lion soccer team suffered a 4-0 loss while the Lions fell 5-2 at the Josh Riley Soccer Complex.

The Lady Lions kicked things off first in the opening match-up of the night and struggled to distract Columbia on the attack. Lucy Kingsley got things started first for the Cougars with a goal in the third minute off an assist by Kelsey Mirts.

From there, Laurie Frew took over, as she fired in two goals to extend Columbia's lead to three at the 3-0 mark entering the break. Mirts contributed the other goal in the match in the second half to extend Columbia's lead to four, which was all they needed to complete the 4-0 shoutout.

With the loss, the Lady Lions fall to 2-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. Columbia College improves to 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in AMC play with the win.

Meanwhile in the men's match the Cougars controlled the pace early, as they peppered three shots on goal in the first 15 minutes before Columbia midfielder Joey Koetting fired in a goal in the 19th minute to take a 1-0 lead. However, despite Columbia finding the back of the net early, the Lions were able to shut the Cougars down the remainder of the first half to enter the break down just 1-0.

However, the second half would be a much different story, as the Cougars added to their lead with a flurry of goals from Ximo Gill, Aaron Noel, Nick Horne, and Michael Mayberry to give the Columbia the 5-0 lead.

The Lions; however, would not go down without a fight, as they were able to fire in two goals near the end of regulation to close the gap to three goals. Daniel Peinado found the back of the net first the 73rd minute while Noah Lovell fired in a goal in the 79th minute. However, three goals would be as close as FHU would get, as they fell 5-2.

With the loss, the Lions fall to 1-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. Columbia College improves to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in AMC play with the win.

UP NEXT: The Freed-Hardeman soccer teams are back in action Tuesday, September 19th, as they make the trip Lyon College to face the Scots. The Lady Lions kick things off first at 1:30 PM followed by the men's match at 4:00 PM at the  J. Marshall Huser Field in Batesville, Ark.
