Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. - There should be no doubt as to why the Union (Tenn.) University Lady Bulldogs are the No. 1 team in the nation.
Union shot 60.4 percent from the field - and was even better from 3-point range making 7-of-10 - and held No. 6 Freed-Hardeman to 31.7 percent shooting as the Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 79-50 victory on Saturday afternoon at Fred Delay Gymnasium.
If it could have gone right for Union in the first half, it sure seemed like it did. The Lady Bulldogs shot 19-of-30 from the field and 4-of-5 from 3-point range. By contrast, Freed-Hardeman made just 10-of-30 shots from the floor and missed all seven attempts from behind the arc as Union built a 44-22 halftime advantage.
The second half, unfortunately, was more of the same. Union led by as many as 35 points before FHU made some shots late.
Freed-Hardeman's shooting woes against Union from 3-point range continued. In last season's conference championship, FHU went 0-of-15 from behind the arc. The Lady Lions missed their first seven threes and made only 2-of-14 in the game.
Reigning NAIA Player of the Year Josephine Owino led all scorers with 20 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. Kaitlin Dudley scored 12 - all in the first half - while Kayla Hudson added 15 and Lavanda Ross chipped in 13 off the bench. Freed-Hardeman was led by
Jana Cross with 14 points.
Tara Deatheridge scored all 12 of her points after halftime and
Chelsie Alsup added 11 points.
Union improves to 17-1 on the season and 5-0 in conference play. FHU is now 14-5 overall and 4-2 in conference.
The Lady Lions are back in action on Monday as they travel to Batesville, Ark., to take on Lyon College. It will be their third game in five days.
