Lions play for first-ever conference championship

Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - After 34 years of waiting, the Freed-Hardeman Lions finally have the chance to hang a conference championship banner in the rafters of the Sports Center.

To do that, however, would take beating the conference's regular season champion for the third time this season.

The Lions (24-8, 13-3) travel to Jackson to take on No. 7 Union (Tenn.) for the TranSouth Conference tournament championship tonight. It will be the first time that an FHU men's team has played in a conference title game since becoming a four-year program in 1974.

FHU won both regular season meetings against the Bulldogs (27-5, 14-2), 69-66 at Union on Jan. 17 and 75-73 at FHU on Feb. 21. Those were Union's only two conference losses of the season.

WHERE:
Union's Fred Delay Gymnasium, 7:00 PM. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for students. FHU students get in free with a student ID.

ON THE AIR: WFHU, 91.5, pregame begins at 6:45.

SERIES: Union leads, 59-28

BLACKOUT THE BULLDOGS: All FHU fans are asked to wear black to the game tonight in support of the Lions.

LION LOWDOWN
  • Kansas City, here we come: Win or lose in tonight's game, the Lions appear to be in excellent shape to receive a bid to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City on March 18-24. FHU has only been to the national tournament once in school history when the Lions made the trip in 1998, losing to Southern Nazarene (Okla.) in the first round.
  • 3-point threat: Jesse Moulton's 85 3-pointers this season has him tied with Jason Goatley for fifth all-time in a season at FHU. Only Nathan Aaron and James Cadle have made more 3-pointers in a season.
  • Over .500: Saturday's win over Cumberland (Tenn.) pushed FHU head coach Jason Shelton's career record to 64-63. Since the start of the 2007-08 season, Shelton's record is 44-19.
  • Two commitments: The Lions have two players committed to joining the program for the 2009-10 season with James Haddix, a 6-foot-9 center from Franklin, Tenn., and Jonathan Milewski, a 6-foot-2 guard from Memphis, Tenn.
