Lions edge Atlanta Christian in two overtimes

Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lion soccer team definitely saved the best for last on Thursday night.

The Lions scored twice in the game's final five minutes to force overtime, then finished the job with a goal seven minutes into the second overtime period to take an exciting 3-2 win over visiting Atlanta Christian College in the team's season opener.

Neither team scored in the first half, though FHU outshot the Chargers 11-4. ACC's James Webb finally broke the scoreless tie after scoring off a rebound in the 53rd minute.

For the next 33 minutes, it looked like his goal might very well be enough. As it turned out, there was still plenty of scoring left to be done.

Simbarashe Zvaita put FHU on the board in the 86th minute after converting on a penalty kick. However, Webb struck again for Atlanta Christian less than one minute later as he sent a ball from 25 feet out that went just under the outstretched arms of FHU keeper Alexandre Girodo.

The Lions, though, had an answer. After quickly pushing the ball back down the field, Ryan Engineer put in a rebound to tie the match at 2-2 with just over one minute remaining to help send the match to overtime. Neither team scored in the first overtime, though FHU outshot ACC 5-0.

Six minutes into the second overtime period, Archibold Marowa flipped a pass over a defender to Engineer, who in turn sent the ball into the back of the net for what looked like the golden goal. However, it was disallowed due to an offsides call.

So the two did it again just moments later.

Marowa again took the ball down the center of the field and found Engineer running ahead, but this time there was no offsides call as the junior forward scored his second goal of the night to give FHU the win.

The Lions outshot ACC 32-12 on the night, including 8-0 in overtime.

Freed-Hardeman returns to action tomorrow night against Brewton-Parker (Ga.) College at 7:00 PM at the Josh Riley Soccer Complex.
