Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - It didn't take long for the No. 6 Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions to recover from an upset loss on Monday, rebounding with a 78-55 win over No. 5 Saint Xavier (Ill.) University on Tuesday at the Daytona Beach Shootout.
FHU (10-3) took an 18-point lead into halftime and never looked back in picking up its third win against a top 10 opponent this season. The Lady Lions also have wins over then-No. 5 Vanguard (Calif.) University and then-No. 8 Oklahoma Baptist.
Lady Lion head coach Dale Neal was pleased with his team's ability to pick up its intensity after playing a little flat in Monday's 67-63 loss to No. 19 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College, which was well-timed given the style of play that St. Xavier employs.
"They force you to execute at a fast pace," Neal said. "We did an excellent job with that as well as matching their intensity and not letting them be the aggressor."
Freed-Hardeman got a big performance from
Leslie Morgan in her second career start. The redshirt freshman scored 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range and grabbed seven rebounds, both career highs.
"Leslie's performance was a big plus for us," said Neal. "Having a big guard [5-foot-10] like that helps. She can get to the boards and give us additional things we don't have."
Meribeth Boehler and
Maria Bagwell also got to the boards as Bagwell pulled down 11 and Boehler a season-high 16 to go along with 25 points, her sixth double-double of the season.
Natalie Shumpert followed her 22-point performance with 17 points and a game-high seven assists against just one turnover.
Freed-Hardeman gets a break before returning to the floor to host Tennessee Temple University on Jan. 4 at 5:00 PM.
