Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - Hat tricks have been fairly common during the first week of the new soccer seasons at Freed-Hardeman University.
Five days after Whitney Newby opened the Lady Lions' season with a trio of goals,
Kenniel Hyde did the same for the Lions as FHU downed visiting Point (Ga.) University, 3-1, on Tuesday evening at the Josh Riley Soccer Complex.
It only took the Lions two minutes to get onto the board, as Hyde took a free kick from
Guilherme Dorigo in the box, dribbled free and drilled a shot into the net to give FHU an early lead.
Hyde added to that lead in the 13th minute on a chested pass from
Simbarashe Zvaita that he settled and sent past Point keeper Tony Olvera for his second goal of the match.
Point answered seven minutes later when a misplayed ball in the FHU defense allowed Guadalupe Hernandez an open look at the net. He lofted a ball from well outside the box over the head of Lion keeper
Alexandre Girodo and into the back of the net.
Though the Lions controlled the run of play for most of the second half, the match remained tight until Hyde recorded his third goal in the 80th minute after he and Zvaita exchanged a series of touches. Hyde finished it off after taking a pass in the center of the box and bending a ball just inside the right post.
FHU took 29 shots to Point's five and held the edge in shots on goal, 12-3.
The Lions return to action tomorrow as they visit Williams Baptist (Ark.) College for a 3:00 PM kick-off.
