Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman soccer teams are both in need of a win in American Midwest Conference play, and will get that chance tonight as they host Missouri Baptist University. The men's match will be played first at 5:00 PM, followed by the women at 7:00.
MEN'S MATCH - 5:00 PM
SETTING THE STAGE
Both FHU (5-3, 1-3) and Missouri Baptist (0-8-2, 0-3) are in need of wins to move up in the American Midwest Conference standings as they fight for a spot in the conference tournament. The Lions have lost three straight and have been shut out in each of those losses. The Spartans are coming off a pair of 1-0 losses in conference play.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Todd D'Aquila scored the golden goal in the 98th minute to give MBU a 2-1 win over FHU on Oct. 11, 2013. The Lions equalized the match in the 89th minute on a goal by Matias Bravo to send it to extra time.
WHAT TO WATCH
- Although the Spartans come into tonight's match winless in 10 tries, they have been in nearly every match they have played. Six of their eight losses have come by a one-goal margin including a 1-0 loss to defending national champion Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College and a 1-0 overtime loss to preseason No. 11 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) University. It's safe to say their record is deceiving.
- After a 5-0 start, the Lions have lost three straight and have not scored during that span. FHU senior and scoring leader Stefano Basso has missed the majority of the Lions' last three matches. Getting him back on the field tonight would definitely be a shot in the arm for the Freed-Hardeman attack.
- Though they have played a very strong schedule, MBU has been out-shot on the season by a margin of 215-78 and 91-39 in shots on goal. One reason they have been able to stay in matches despite the shot differential has been goalkeeper John Schnurbush, who has made 56 stops in six matches with a save percentage of 87.5 percent.
- Both teams need a win tonight in order to stay in the hunt for a spot in the conference tournament. While both are near the bottom of the conference standings, there are still plenty of games to play - but finding wins is vital at this point.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Missouri Baptist has played four ranked teams this season, going 0-3-1 in those matches by a combined score of 5-2.
- Both teams are looking to break scoreless streaks. MBU has gone 163 minutes without a goal while FHU has gone 210 minutes without a goal.

WOMEN'S MATCH - 7:00 PM
SETTING THE STAGE
The Lady Lions (5-3-1, 2-2) are coming off a disappointing road loss to Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) on Saturday and will look to bounce back against a strong Missouri Baptist (3-3-3, 3-0-1) squad that is on a five-match unbeaten streak.
LAST TIME THEY MET
MBU out-shot FHU, 22-2, but a solid defensive effort by Freed-Hardeman kept the match close as the Spartans earned a 1-0 win on Oct. 11, 2013. A goal by Argell London in the 76th minute was the difference.
WHAT TO WATCH
- The Lady Lions have struggled with slow starts this season on several occasions. It will be important to avoid that tonight, and to set the tone early against an MBU squad that has scored 16 goals in its last five matches.
- Nearly half of MBU's 18 goals this season have come from Donna Joliff and Mary Lee, who have four apiece. The transfer forwards have added punch to the Spartan offense and need constant attention from the FHU back line.
- FHU forward Julianne Renner has been impressive this season, but has been quiet in both of FHU's conference losses taking a total of three shots in those matches. The Lady Lions will need to find a way to get her involved in the attack and help open things up for fellow forward Sydney Dubiel, whose speed can create 1-on-1 opportunities with the opposing keeper.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Julianne Renner leads FHU with eight goals, already surpassing her 2013 total. She needs two more to become the fourth player in program history to score 10 or more goals in a season.
- Renner also ranks seventh in career goals at FHU and needs one more to tie Helena Yegros for sixth.
- During its five-match unbeaten streak, MBU has out-shot its opponents 91-49.
