SETTING THE STAGE
Freed-Hardeman (14-1, 9-0) hasn't lost a game on the floor yet this season - their only loss was a forfeited win - but in both 2012 and 2014, the Lady Lions were handed their first losses of the season by Lyon on the road. The Scots (11-3, 7-1) have won eight straight games after a 3-3 start and are 6-0 in Becknell Gymnasium. FHU has lost in its last three trips to Lyon. Both teams are also unbeaten when facing ranked opponents this season (FHU 3-0, Lyon 2-0).
LAST TIME THEY MET
The Scots went on a 3-point barrage, going 12-of-23 from behind the arc, and built a big early lead on their way to an 81-72 win over FHU in Batesville on Feb. 15, 2014. The loss snapped FHU's 24-game winning streak despite Hayley Newby's career-high 33 points.
INSIDE THE SERIES
After splitting the regular-season games last season, FHU now leads the all-time series 29-10. FHU also leads the all-time series at Lyon, 14-6, although the Scots have won three in a row at home over Freed-Hardeman. FHU's last win in Batesville came on Jan. 28, 2010, by the score of 73-66.
OFFENSE VS. DEFENSE
Tonight's matchup will feature one of the NAIA's best offenses squaring off against one of its best defenses. Lyon ranks fourth in opponent scoring average (52.4 points per game) and 11th in 3-point percentage defense (26.2 percent), while Freed-Hardeman ranks 7th in scoring offense (81.2 points per game) and scoring margin (+24.9 points per game). The Scots like to play a physical, low-possession style while FHU is at its best when getting in transition.
BATTLE OF THE BOARDS
Another interesting matchup will be on the glass, where both teams are among the best rebounding teams in the nation. The Scots rank 12th in the NAIA in rebounding margin (+9.5) while FHU ranks second (+14.8). Lyon's rebounding is more of a team effort as no player averages over seven rebounds per game. FHU has two dominant rebounders in Grace Alonso de Armino (14.9 rpg) and Hayley Newby (11.3 rpg). Lyon is led on the boards by Taylor Gaedtke with 6.6 per game. Both teams are also very good on the offensive boards - FHU rebounds 44.9 percent of its misses while Lyon grabs 41.2 percent of its misses.
NEWBY EXPECTED BACK
All-American senior forward Hayley Newby should be back on the floor tonight for Freed-Hardeman. Newby missed the last two games with a minor injury. She leads the team in scoring (20.0 ppg) and shoots 52.6 percent from the floor.
3-POINT STRUGGLES
Both teams have struggled from 3-point range this season as FHU is shooting 31.0 percent coming into the game and Lyon is shooting 26.2 percent. Lyon's Carina Jackson (36.8 percent) is the only player on the team shooting better than 30 percent from behind the arc while Brandee Busenlehner (40.8 percent) is the lone Lady Lion over 30 percent.
20 TIMES FOUR
Senior forward Grace Alonso de Armino has been carrying much of the scoring load over the last four games, scoring 20 or more points in each contest. In those games she is averaging 24.8 points and 17.0 rebounds per game. She set a new career high on Tuesday with 28 points against Williams Baptist (Ark.) College.
THE CLIMB TO 1000
Alonso de Armino is also with striking distance of grabbing her 1000th career rebound, entering tonight's game with 974. She is looking to become the fifth player in program history to reach 1000 career rebounds and the first to accumulate 1000 points, 1000 rebounds, 200 assists and 200 steals in a career.
SCOUTING THE SCOTS
Lyon shares several similarities with FHU - tough at home, physical, and a strong rebounding and defensive team. The Scots do play at a slower pace most of the time, though, which could give them a distinct advantage if they build an early lead like they did last year. They also utilize a deeper bench with 10 players averaging 10 or more minutes per game. Carina Jackson, last year's AMC Newcomer of the Year, leads the team in scoring with 12.8 points per game; Taylor Gaedtke is the only other player in double-figures at 11.3 points per game.
