HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lions will look to improve their record to above .500 on Friday as they host Brewton-Parker (Ga.) in the opening day of the Lions Cup Invitational.
FHU (1-1) opened the season last Thursday with a 1-0 win over Point (Ga.) University (1-2) with the only goal coming by Lions forward George Achard in the 50th minute of play. The Lions did a lot of things well defensively, highlighted by an impressive outing by FHU keeper Zach Johnson, who had six saves against the active Skyhawk offense.
The Lions started their second game of the season well at St. Catharine College (2-0), limiting the Patriots from scoring during the first half of the match. FHU struck first in the 62nd minute of play with a goal by Brandon Rodriguez; however, three late goals by the Patriots sent the Lions home with their first loss of the season.
Brewton Parker is coming off a 3-0 home win against Lagrange (Ga.) College on Tuesday, where the Barons were led by Ernesto Guerra (1 goal, 2 shots on goal) and Piero Echegaray (1 goal).
Prior to Monday's match, the Barons had struggled to put together any scoring runs, losing 1-3 to Point University in their season opener and 0-1 to Truett-McConnell (Ga.).
Jason Elliott, Head Coach for the Lions said that FHU would need to be aggressive in order to be successful in tonight's match.
"We look to bounce back after a tough loss on Saturday," he said. "Brewton Parker will keep the ball and play the right way so we will need to stay organized and really attack the flanks to be successful."
