WBB GAMEDAY: No. 11 Lady Lions at No. 6 Lyon College

HENDERSON, Tenn. - The No. 11 Lady Lion basketball team will look to gain some traction in the conference standings tonight as they travel to No. 6 Lyon (Ark.) College for a 5:30 PM match-up in Batesville, Ark. for the American Midwest Conference Game of the Week.

The Lady Lions currently sit two games behind Columbia (Mo.) College (23-1, 17-1 AMC) and Lyon (21-2, 17-1 AMC) in the conference standings and will have some opportunities late in the season to make a charge for the top spot in the American Midwest Conference.

SETTING THE STAGE

FHU (18-5, 14-3 AMC) enter tonight's match-up coming off a a 62-55 victory over Park (Mo.) University (7-10, 7-12 AMC) on Saturday. Taleeah Cross led all scorers in the match-up as she went 10-for-18 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line to reach the career-high performance. Kim Mallory and Kenley Crowell also reached double figures in the contest as Mallory finished with 12 points while Crowell went 3-for-5 from behind the arc to chip in 11.

FHU shot an impressive 47.3 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three-point range compared to Park University, who shot just 35.0 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from three-point range.

FHU would reach their largest lead of the game in the second quarter as they led by 14 at the 26-12 mark with 8:08 remaining in the half. The Lady Lions would keep a double-digit lead for a majority of the second quarter as they closed the half up 10 at the 34-24 mark. Cross added six points in the second quarter to enter the break with 14 points.

The Lady Lions would struggle to score to begin the second half as the Pirates out-shot FHU 10-2 in the first seven minutes of the third quarter to pull within two at the 36-34 mark with 3:08 remaining in the quarter.

Kenley Crowell would respond to the Park scoring run with five straight points as she was able to connect on a three-point field goal and a jump shot to extend the Lady Lion lead to six at the 42-36 mark with one minute remaining in the quarter. Following a bucket by Selena Dunn, Cross would connect on a free throw to give the Lady Lions a 42-38 advantage entering the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter would belong to Cross as she continued to give Park fits with the dribble and drive. Cross chipped in 11 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter, which allowed the Lady Lions to extend their lead to 10 at the 62-52 mark with 1:55 remaining in the game. The Pirates would attempt to make a late push to close the game as Sydney Heard connected on a three-point field goal to pull Park within seven. However, it would be too late as FHU held on for the 62-55 victory.

SCOUTING THE SCOTS

Lyon College enters tonight's match-up coming off a 90-29 blowout win over St. Louis College of Pharmacy (2-17, 1-17 AMC) on Saturday to improve to 17-1 in league play.

The Scots are led by junior guard Jamie Jackson, who averages 12.46 points per game and has shot 47.4 percent from the field so far this season. Jackson also leads the team in three other categories including rebounds per game (5.86), steals per game (3.59) and blocks per game (0.82).

As a team, the Scots average 70.2 points per game and have shot 45.6 percent from the field and 36.6 percent from behind the arc while averaging 36.0 rebounds per game, led by Jackson.

Tonight's game marks the sixth meeting between FHU and Lyon College since the Lady Lions joined the AMC during the 2013-14 season. The Lady Lions lead the series 3-2 since joining the AMC. Overall, FHU has faced Lyon 20 times in school history and leads the series 15-5.

The last time the two schools met was earlier this season on December 31, 2015 , where the Lady Lions suffered their fourth loss of the season in the 62-57 overtime loss at the Brewer Sports Center.

The Lady Lions will look to rebound from their loss to the Scots earlier in the season and pick up a much needed victory to improve their position in the conference standings.
