Late free-throws push Lions past Shock

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Lions basketball team (5-2, 2-0 MSC) edged its wasy past Washington Adventist (3-3) in a 65-62 win in The Show on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions went down 10-3 early in the first half, but a 10-0 run gave the Lions their first lead in the game. The Lions led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but a strong run by the Shock led to a 32-28 Lions lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Shock came storming back, and even led by as many as four points with 6:24 remaining in the contest. But thanks to made free throws from Kortland Martin and Alex Rush, along with a layup from Geraldo Lane, the Lions were able to tie the game with just under six minutes left. The Lions took the lead with 5:23 left after a made jumper from Rush, and despite a tied game with 1:25 to go, a layup and four made free throws from Martin gave the Lions the win.

Martin led all scorers with 18 points in the contest. Lane came away with 11 rebounds and 10 points for the double-double.

The Lions will close out The Show on Sunday when they take on Indiana East. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CST.
