Box Score WEST POINT, Ga. – The Lions basketball team (1-0) opened its season up with a win over Point University (2-2) with an 89-75 win over the Skyhawks on Wednesday night.
The Lions led the game from wire to wire, which started with a Kortland Martin layup and ended with a Hunter Scurlock dunk after a steal with 30 seconds left in the contest.
The Lions led by as many as 16 in the first half after starting off the game with an 8-0 run, and they were able to take a 44-31 lead into the break.
They picked up right where they left off in the second half, scoring 45 points in the final 20 minutes to earn the win.
The Lions dominated the Skyhawks in nearly every major statistic, outshooting Point 45 percent to 43 percent from the field and 41 percent to just 26 percent from deep. They also forced 14 turnovers, while only turning it over eight times themselves, which they were able to convert to 18 points.
Martin led all scorers in the contest, starting off his senior season with 29 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists.
Freshman Geraldo Lane had a strong coming-out party, recording a double-double in his Lions debut with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Dawson Bailey had 14 points off the bench in a game where he went 4-for-4 from behind the arc alongside a 2-for-2 night from the charity stripe for a perfect night shooting the ball.
The Lions will be back in action on Saturday when they return home for Homecoming Weekend to face off against former American Midwest Conference foe Harris-Stowe. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
