Lions edged out by Phoenix in MSC opener

Box Score

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Lions soccer team (0-2, 0-1 MSC) fell 3-2 to Cumberland University (1-0, 1-0 MSC) in its Mid-South Conference opener on Tuesday afternoon.

After a deadlocked, scoreless first half, the Lions were able to break the stalemate with a goal by Kenneth Ramirez in the 50th minute. Alexandros Leondakis sent a corner kick into the box that was deflected off the head of Roster Gisbert Castellort, and it fell right at the feet of Ramirez who fired it into the back of the Phoenix net.

Cumberland would go on to respond in the 55th minute after they were rewarded a penalty kick due to a Lion handball inside the penalty box.

The Phoenix took the lead with another goal in the 58th minute, and would hold the 2-1 lead until Ramirez blasted his second goal of the game with just over three minutes remaining in regulation to send the game into sudden death overtime.

The overtime period was back and forth, but the Phoenix were able to catch a break and scored with just over a minute remaining in the first half of extra time to end the game.

The Lions are scheduled to be back in action when they host Thomas More on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled to be at 2 p.m.
