MOUNT VERNON, Ga. — Opening their 2023 campaign on an extended road trip, the Freed-Hardeman University Lions soccer team had a quick start against the Brewton-Parker (Ga.) College Barons, but ultimately fell under the lights 2-1.
It did not take five minutes for FHU (0-1) to light up the scoreboard, where the first shot of the season found the back of the net. Coming off of the boot of
Rodrigo Tostado at 4:44, FHU took an early advantage.
The hosting Barons (1-0) wasted no time in their season premiere by scoring the equalizer less than five minutes later at the 7:17 mark.
From there, the Lions maintained possession for a majority of the match, firing off 17 shots to BPC's seven. The scores remained level throughout the remainder of the first half and a majority of the second half until a long pass found an open Baron on the left side of the box at 68:07, sending a shot over the shoulder of
Omer Shifris. Despite putting four shots on target in the second half, the Lions could not bounce back with the horn sounding a 2-1 defeat.
João Pedro Brandão equaled the opposition's shot total, toeing seven towards the net, with two being on target. Tostado joined
Avery Flener with two shots on goal each. Shifris took the loss, stopping one shot.
