Box Score HENDERSON — The Freed-Hardeman University soccer team had four Lions net goals in a 4-1 victory over the Eagles of Midway (Ky.) University Eagles.
Extending their win steak, the Lions (5-2-2) were on the board within five minutes when a corner kick at 2:38 was kicked around the box by the Eagles before
Thabang Machaka chipped a loose ball over the right shoulder of the Eagle keeper to give the Lions a 1-0 edge.
The Lions would extend their lead when Midway (1-5-0) committed a foul just outside of the arc, where
João Pedro Brandão's free kick threaded the needle of Eagle defenders to net the Lions' second goal at 16:24. Freed-Hardeman out-shot Midway 13-1 in the first half.
The 2-0 lead for the Lions would hold steady until
Thabo Mahlaha took possession in the second half, moving down to the goal line before passing back to
Avery Flener at 51:45 who fired a rocket into the bottom-right of the net to tally his fifth goal of the 2023 campaign and put FHU on top 3-0.
Midway was able to get on the board in the 52nd minute in an identical format to FHU's first goal when a corner could not be cleared, eventually settling on an Eagle boot to find the back of the net.
Rodrigo Tostado would net the final goal of the match after good ball movement saw Mahlaha chip a pass into the box where Tostado put the finishing touch at 81:59 on his fifth goal of the season.
Omer Shifris picked up the win with seven saves - all in the second half.
