Lion soccer continues winning ways

HENDERSON — The Lions of Freed-Hardeman University extended their win streak to three matches after shutting out the Toppers of Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) University at home 1-0.

The Lions (3-0-0) were on the offensive from kickoff with a pair of goals just missing the net. The first shot on goal ended up the difference-maker when Avery Flener found Filpe Benavides who then booted a shot past the keeper at 32:18 to give the Lions a 1-0 edge.

FHU and Blue Mountain Christian (0-1-1) continued a midfield battle with the next shot for either team coming at 50:11 when Benavides missed high. BMCU turned the pressure up late in the match, shooting five shots in the last 15 minutes, with the potential equalizer being kept out by keeper Eduardo Almansa.

The Lions fired six total shots, three of which were on target including Benavides' goal. Orlando Whiteside, Jr. had the start in goal, with Almansa entering in the second half to combine for their second clean sheet.
