FHU Volleyball Digs Pink

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HENDERSON, Tenn. - While the Freed-Hardeman University volleyball team is getting attention for what it is doing on the floor, a project it has done off the floor might be getting a little bit overlooked.

The Lady Lions, who are currently 24-1 on the season and 11-0 in the TranSouth Conference, hosted "Dig Pink" night on Oct. 7 in cooperation with the Side-Out Foundation. Assistant Coach Cheri Erickson coordinated the event and was very pleased with the support received.

"The event was a great success and we look forward to doing it annually," Erickson said. "People from the community came that night that had never come before. It was nice to see we were making an impact on the community."

Between donations, t-shirt sales, and bake sale items provided by the Freed-Hardeman cheerleaders, the volleyball team was able to raise over $1,000 for breast cancer research. The proceeds benefitted the Side-Out Foundation, a national 501(c)(3) located in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area. Funds are currently devoted to targeted therapies and molecular profiling, where there have been major breakthroughs in diagnostics and treatment.

Freed-Hardeman students also got involved in the effort, particularly those who have family members that have battled the illness.

"The players heard many stories from other students about how breast cancer affected their families and how important the event was to them," said Erickson. "It was nice to be playing for a cause like Dig Pink."

The match against Mid-Continent (Ky.) University saw FHU put together a three-game sweep (25-10, 25-15, 25-13) to remain unbeaten in conference play.

Erickson said donations can still be made through the end of the month by visiting http://www.sideoutvolleyball.org/mainevent/minievent/FreedHar/ and donating securely online via credit or debit card.
