Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - It had been quite a while since the Lady Lion volleyball team had played a match in the friendly confines of Smith-Kirk Court.
After playing 11 consecutive matches on the road and at tournaments, the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions returned home and celebrated with a 3-0 win over Crichton (Tenn.) College on Monday night.
The return home, however, wasn't pretty at first.
After taking an 8-5 lead in the first game, FHU was put on the defense by a Crichton scoring burst. The Lady Comets won 11 of the next 12 points, including nine in a row, to take a 16-9 lead. The Lady Lions managed to chip away at the deficit until finally tying the game at 19-19 before edging ahead for a 25-22 win behind the serving of
Morgan Faulkner and
Fernanda Alves.
The first game seemingly served as a wake-up call, as the Lady Lions dominated the second game from the first serve en route to a 25-10 victory that saw FHU's patented attack keep Crichton off-balance the entire game.
In the third game, the Lady Comets stayed just out of striking distance as FHU completed the sweep with a 25-18 game victory. Head coach Todd Humphry went to his bench for the majority of the game and they delivered. Faulkner led the way with five kills in the game, while four different Lady Lions scored service aces.
FHU improves to 27-3 on the season and hits the road again tomorrow night to face Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University at 7:00 PM, where a Lady Lion victory would clinch the regular season TranSouth Conference championship.
