Lady Lions Win Fifth in a Row

Box Score FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and forced 31 turnovers in Wednesday's 77-58 victory over Benedictine (Kan.) College at the Cruzin Classic in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

The win was FHU's fifth in a row as the No. 9 Lady Lions improve to 11-4 on the season.

Jana Cross, playing in her second game since being sidelined with an injury in late November, looked like her old self early as she scored seven of the team's first 13 points and helped open the door for a 13-0 run - capped off by back-to-back 3-pointers by Whitney Johnson and Hannah Parsley - that put FHU on top 21-12 with 9:55 in the first half.

Benedictine, though, pulled within seven at halftime (38-31) and then cut the Lady Lion lead down to three points early in the second half. But consecutive 3-pointers by Parsley and Chelsie Alsup triggered the beginning of a 19-3 run that pushed FHU ahead, 57-38, with 11:52 remaining.

The Lady Ravens made one final run at the FHU lead, cutting it down to 12 points (67-55) with 4:12 to play, but Parsley answered by scoring eight straight points for the Lady Lions to keep the game out of reach.

Parsley led all scorers with 19 points, 13 of which came in the second half, and connected on five 3-pointers. Whitney Johnson added 14, while Cross scored 13 and Meribeth Boehler contributed 10 points and seven rebounds, five on the offensive side. Tara Deatheridge, who set a school record by making nine 3-pointers in a game last week, set new career highs with eight assists and six steals.

Turnovers were a big difference in the game as the Lady Lions overcame 21 of their own by forcing Benedictine into 31 turnovers that led to 33 points for FHU. The Lady Ravens shot 55 percent from the field compared to FHU's 44.4 percent, but through turnovers and offensive rebounding Freed-Hardeman was able to take 23 more shots.

Freed-Hardeman now takes a couple of weeks off before returning to action on Jan. 8, 2009, against Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College in Pulaski, Tenn.
