Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions moved back into first place in the TranSouth Conference with a 3-1 win over Lyon (Ark.) College on Thursday night in the FHU Sports Center.
FHU (14-9, 8-2) moves a half-game ahead of Bethel (Tenn.) University, which was upset last night by Cumberland (Tenn.) University.
In the first set, however, it looked like the Lady Lions might stay behind Bethel in the standings. Lyon dissected the FHU defense with 13 kills and a .458 attack percentage. Coupled with seven attack errors by the Lady Lions, the Pipers built an early lead that they would turn into a 25-19 win.
The second set was neck-and-neck to entire way with neither team leading by more than three points. The teams were knotted at 22-22 before FHU took the final three points on a
Sydney Rice kill followed by a Lyon attack error and a block by Rice and
Claire Pennington to even the match at one set apiece.
Freed-Hardeman dominated the third set from the opening serve, building an 11-3 lead and cruised to a 25-11 set victory. Lyon committed 12 errors in the set while FHU controlled the net with 11 kills and two blocks.
Lyon bounced back, taking six straight points midway through the fourth set to build a 13-10 lead. FHU, however, responded with four straight points to go ahead by one, and both teams would swap points with neither pulling ahead by more than a point as the score progressed to 21-21.
As they did in the second set, the Lady Lions were able to pull away at the end by taking the match's final four points, finishing it off on a
Karim Raymond kill.
Diana Silva led the FHU attack with 16 kills while
Nataly Gutierrez had 10.
Claire Pennington paced the defense with 10 digs while Silva and
Callie West each had seven.
The Lady Lions return to action tomorrow night as they travel to take on Mid-Continent (Ky.) University.
