Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - The No. 18 Freed-Hardeman Lions got their new season off to a good start with a 103-73 win over Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) College on Friday night in the FHU Sports Center.
FHU outscored the Hornets 32-16 over the final 12:40 of the first half while Coach Jason Shelton showed the depth of his bench, using 12 different players in the first half alone. Five Lions finished the game in double digits, with freshman
Kyle Teichmann leading all scorers with 23 points in his college debut.
There was never one real scoring burst from FHU in the first half. Instead, the Lions systematically pulled away by pounding the ball inside to their post trio of Teichmann,
Zack Frey, and
James Haddix. They combined for 23 first-half points, including 15 of FHU's 32 during the last 12:40 of the half. Frey finished with 19 while Haddix, a freshman, added 12.
Ken Bingham also had 12 points in his Freed-Hardeman debut.
The bench was also quite productive, accounting for 53 points and shooting 50 percent from the field.
The Lions have a tough test awaiting them tomorrow in No. 20 Auburn-Montgomery, who defeated Blue Mountain (Miss.) College, 99-75, earlier in the evening. The Senators advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NAIA National Tournament last year.
Notes: FHU is 5-0 in season openers under Shelton and 13-1 in home openers in the Sports Center...Teichmann's 23 points are the most by a freshman in his first game in at least the last 14 years. Box scores are currently unavailable for seasons before 1995-96...Frey's 19 points puts him six away from moving into 18th on FHU's career scoring list. He now has 1,310 career points...Tomorrow will mark the first time FHU has played Auburn Montgomery on the men's side. The Lady Lions have faced off against AUM on three different occasions, twice in the national tournament.
