No. 9 Lady Lions open season with 74-50 win

Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - The No. 9 Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions opened the new season with a 74-50 win over visiting Asbury (Ky.) University on Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center.

FHU used a 12-1 run early in the second half to build a 16 point lead, and kept that lead in double digits the rest of the way.

That run came of the heels of a 9-2 Asbury (0-2) run that saw the Eagles pull within five points at 39-34 with 16:34 left, but the Lady Lions responded by scoring on six of their next seven possessions with Meribeth Boehler and Summer Waggoner each scoring four points during the run.

Asbury pulled within 12 points (55-43) at the 8:25 mark, but got no closer as Freed-Hardeman outscored the Eagles 19-7 the rest of the way.

Boehler dealt with double- and triple-teams the entire game but still managed to score 16 points and pull down 11 rebounds. Whitney Johnson was one rebound short of a double-double herself, with 13 points and nine boards. Waggoner came off the bench to add a career-high 12 points, 11 of which came in the second half.

The Lady Lions return to action on Saturday, Nov. 6, as they host No. 12 University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) at 2:00 PM.
