Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - Derek Williford's first shutout in three years helped the Freed-Hardeman Lions pick up a double-header split with Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University on Friday evening at Carnes Field.
Williford (1-1) scattered five hits over seven innings in the nightcap while striking out five. The shutout was the first since March 17, 2007, for the senior left-hander, who has battled arm trouble throughout his career at Freed-Hardeman.
His performance led to the 30th win of the season for the Lions, marking the third straight 30-win season for Freed-Hardeman and the first under new head coach Jonathan Estes. The Lions bounced back to take game two, 5-0, after dropping the first game 14-3.
FHU (30-16, 7-7) only had five hits in the second game but made the most of their baserunners, stranding only three for the game.
Noslen Labrada's sacrifice fly in the first inning scored
Robert Prieto, who led off the inning with a walk. The Lions got two more in the second on an RBI single by
Derek Bush and a sacrifice fly by
Josh Reynolds.
Labrada added an RBI double in the sixth and later scored FHU's final run of the game on a
Joe Mike sacrifice fly, the third of the game for the Lions.
In the opening game, the Trojans scored six times in the fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead. They added three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings as Freed-Hardeman went through four pitchers in the game.
Gage Franklin (4-3) took the loss, giving up seven runs in 3-2/3 innings.
Evan Mansell had a pair of RBI singles for the Lions in the loss as FHU left 12 runners on base.
The series will hopefully conclude with a single nine-inning game on Saturday, weather-permitting.
