Box Score MAYFIELD, Ky. - Kyle Teichmann scored a game-high 26 points while the Freed-Hardeman Lions knocked down 13 3-pointers for the third time in the last four games, adding up to an 82-62 win over Mid-Continent (Ky.) University on Saturday afternoon.
It was long-range shooting that helped the Lions (13-7, 5-1) build a 20 point lead at halftime as FHU connected on 9-of-15 from behind the arc, including three apiece from
Anthony Sampson and
Cedric Austin.
The Lions cooled down from 3-point range in the second half, but got 13 points after the break from Teichmann and did manage to make some timely 3-pointers including one from Austin and another from
Jonathan Milewski that slowed down a late rally by the Cougars (8-12, 1-5).
Freed-Hardeman extended its lead to 24 points early in the half but Mid-Continent went on a 12-0 run to turn what looked like a blowout into a 65-55 game with 9:32 to play. The Lions responded with nine straight points that featured a big 3-pointer by Austin and a traditional 3-point play from
James Haddix to give FHU some breathing room.
The Cougars were still within 15 points with just inside four minutes left until Milewski's 3-pointer effectively ended MCU's momentum.
The Lions were playing without another senior today as
Brian Pearson sustained an injury late in Thursday's win over Martin Methodist. He was one of three seniors (
Ken Bingham,
Vincent Barnes) sidelined today due to injuries.
Teichmann posted his second double-double in a row with 10 rebounds to go along with his game-high 26 points.
James Haddix also set a career-high on the glass with 11 rebounds as FHU held a plus-14 edge on the boards. Sampson and Austin each scored 15 points and dished out eight and five assists respectively.
Freed-Hardeman returns to action on Thursday as the Lions host Lyon (Ark.) College at 8:00 PM.
