Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lions bounced back from yesterday's tough loss in a big way, downing McKendree (Ill.) University on the last day of the Union University Thanksgiving Classic, 91-59.
It marks the second time this season that FHU has defeated an NCAA Division II squad. McKendree is in its second year of transition into full NCAA membership.
The Lions (5-2) opened the game with a 3-pointer by
Daniel Gravatt and never trailed.
An early 11-2 run gave FHU a 19-9 lead at the 11:48 mark, and a quick 8-0 burst shortly thereafter extended the lead to 14 points. The Lions didn't let up, outscoring the Bearcats 16-3 over the last seven minutes of the first half to take a commanding 45-20 lead into halftime.
McKendree (4-4) never pulled back within 20 points for the remainder of the game as FHU led by as many as 34 points late in the contest.
For this first time this season, the Lions put six players in double figures led by
Jonathan Milewski's 15 points.
Anthony Sampson recorded his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 assists, the fourth time in seven games that the senior point guard has dished out 10 or more assists.
Reginald Gilmore and
Michael Young both scored career-highs off the bench, 14 for Gilmore and 11 for Young.
Kyle Teichmann and Gravatt added 13 and 10 points respectively.
The Lions shot the ball much better than they did on Friday, knocking down 53.5 percent from the field and 47.1 percent from 3-point range.
FHU returns to the floor on Tuesday as the Lions host Life (Ga.) University at 6:00 PM.
