Box Score JACKSON, Miss. - Last year, the Freed-Hardeman Lion basketball team didn't have much luck against Tougaloo (Miss.) College, dropping all three contests between the two squads.
This year, the Lions fared much better.
For the second time, FHU defeated the No. 13 Bulldogs in overtime, this time on the road as the Lions pulled out an 86-83 victory at the Tougaloo Classic on Friday night.
The Lions are 3-0 in overtime games this season.
Freed-Hardeman defeated Tougaloo in Henderson, 91-90, on Nov. 5 but also suffered its worst loss of the season at the hands of the Bulldogs, who downed the Lions 97-68 on Nov. 25 at the Union University Thanksgiving Classic. The Bulldogs made 18 3-pointers in that game.
Tougaloo did not have quite as hot of a hand from behind the arc in the final meeting of the regular season, making only 6-of-22 from long range. The improved Lion defense, coupled with more efficient play on the offensive end, helped FHU lead for the majority of the game.
However, the Bulldogs managed to take the lead with less than 1:30 to play after a pair of Lion turnovers led to baskets for Tougaloo. Moments later, freshman
Orlando Bass connected on a clutch 3-pointer with 16 seconds left to put FHU up 79-78.
Tougaloo's Donteeno Todd was fouled with four seconds left and, after tying the game with his first free throw, missed the second. The rebound was tipped out and while FHU got to the loose ball, not enough time remained to get a good shot to end regulation.
In overtime,
Kyle Teichmann's basket in the post put the Lions ahead by three. Tougaloo then missed a 3-pointer with six seconds left and did not foul after FHU grabbed the rebound.
FHU (6-3) got a double-double from Teichmann with 28 points and 10 rebounds.
Anthony Sampson added a season-high 15 points while
Reginald Gilmore came off the bench to score 10 points. Sampson also snagged a career-high seven steals.
The game also marked the return to the floor of
Chandler Mack, who missed five games with a potential medical condition. Mack had eight points and six rebounds in 22 minutes.
Freed-Hardeman returns to the floor at Tougaloo on Saturday to face Talladega (Ala.) College at 4:00 PM.
