Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. - A Lady Lion basketball player scored 30 points in Saturday's win over Cumberland (Tenn.) University, and this time it wasn't
Meribeth Boehler.
Natalie Shumpert scored a career-high 30 points as the No. 7 Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions led wire-to-wire to pick up their ninth straight win in the series against the Bulldogs, 80-71, to improve to 19-5 on the season and 8-2 in conference play. She is the first Lady Lion to score at least 30 in a game this season aside from Boehler, who has done it five times.
FHU led by 14 points (51-37) with 13:04 left but Cumberland (11-12, 3-7) kept the Lady Lions from running away with it, and instead made things interesting after an 8-2 run brought the Bulldogs within six points at the 3:30 mark.
But Shumpert and backcourt teammate
Whitney Johnson helped make sure CU didn't get any closer, combining to score FHU's final 13 points, 11 of which came from the free throw line. Shumpert ended up making 11-of-12 from the line in the game.
Despite having one of the worst shooting games of her season, Boehler still managed 22 points and 15 rebounds for her fourth straight double-double. Johnson added 11 points while
Maria Bagwell matched Boehler with 15 rebounds as FHU won the battle of the boards, 47-30.
Cumberland instead used the 3-pointer to stay close, making 10-of-22 from behind the arc. Freed-Hardeman, meanwhile, struggled from long distance in converting only 3-of-11 shots and only took one in the second half.
The Lady Lions get a week of rest before hosting No. 1 Union (Tenn.) University on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 2:00 PM.
