Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. - Freed-Hardeman senior
Whitney Johnson picked a very good time to have a career night.
Johnson scored a career-high 26 points to lead the second-seeded Lady Lions to an easy win over third-seeded Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) College, 71-50, on Friday night in Oman Arena in the second round of the NAIA Division I Women's National Basketball Tournament.
With the win, FHU (26-8) will make the program's sixth appearance in the quarterfinals where it will face top-seeded and No. 2 ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) University on Saturday at 8:00 PM.
It was Johnson and
Maria Bagwell who came up with big plays in the first half, covering up for a slow start from
Meribeth Boehler and
Natalie Shumpert. After combining for 51 points in Freed-Hardeman's win on Thursday, the team's top two scorers combined to shoot 4-of-20 from the field before halftime.
"Our scoring almost always has to come from Meribeth and Natalie," said FHU head coach Dale Neal, "and they were struggling. For Whitney to pick up that slack was huge for us."
FHU led 31-14 at the break despite shooting 31.4 percent from the floor and 0-of-8 from 3-point range. Picking up where they left off in Thursday's win, the Lady Lions were able to lessen the damage with 10 second-chance points off of 12 offensive rebounds - three apiece from Bagwell and Johnson.
"In the first half we were going out and getting shots instead of moving efficiently and letting shots come to us," Neal said.
Despite being outsized by a LCSC (29-5) lineup whose smallest player was taller than four of the Lady Lion starters, FHU still dominated the boards with a 49-22 rebounding advantage and as many offensive rebounds as the Warriors had total rebounds.
"We aggressively went for every loose ball, every rebound. We out-quicked them to the ball," said Neal. "Against a bigger team, if you can be a little more physical and a little quicker to the ball, you can make up for it. We anticipated where the ball was going and sprinted to everything. That made a big difference."
Unlike the first-round matchup with Shorter (Ga.) University, the Lady Lions built a big lead early in the game. After a basket by Alyssa Fierro made it an 11-6 FHU lead with 13:54 on the clock, Freed-Hardeman out-scored LCSC 18-6 over the next 10 minutes to build a 17-point lead. Johnson scored 10 of her 12 first-half points in the midst of the run.
Bagwell did most of her damage in the first half, scoring seven points and pulling down six rebounds by halftime. She was strong on the glass early on both ends of the floor, helping to set the tone for the rest of the game.
Boehler and Shumpert got into the scoring act in the second half as Boehler recorded 11 after halftime and Shumpert had 10. Boehler finished the game with 19 points and 13 rebounds, her 17th double-double of the season.
She also surpassed Qiana Elam as the program's single-season top scorer, moving into the top spot after scoring a put-back with 9:28 to go in the first half. Boehler upped her total points this season to 795, well ahead of Elam's record of 781 set in the 1999-2000 season.
FHU never let up in the second half, continuing to extend its lead to as many as 29 points after a Johnson layup with 4:51 left before a late run by the Warriors cut the final margin down to 21.
Defensively, the Lady Lions held LCSC leading scorer Jasmine Stohr (18.4 ppg) to a season-low five points. Kenna Reiter was the only Warrior in double figures with 12 points.
In addition to her 26 points, Johnson added eight rebounds and four assists. Shumpert finished with 14 points and also had eight rebounds.
Despite the two teams' combining for 30 national tournament appearances, 13 of which have come in the same year, this was the first-ever meeting between the programs. It was the second year in a row that Lewis-Clark lost in the second round.
For Freed-Hardeman, a sixth trip to the quarterfinals awaits. FHU is 2-3 all-time in quarterfinal games with the last trip coming in 2008 when the Lady Lions defeated Lubbock Christian (Texas) University to advance to the Fab Four.
Campbellsville has made quick work of both of its opponents thus far in the tournament, downing John Brown (Ark.) 76-51 on Thursday and Langston (Okla.) University 80-67 today, a game in which CU led by 25 points in the second half. Saturday's game will feature a matchup between the top two scorers in the NAIA in Boehler and CU's Whitney Ballinger.
