Box Score 2 MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. - The Lady Lion volleyball squad (3-1) finished its run in the Mliligan Mountain Madness tournament by falling to Shorter (Ga.) College, 3-1, after sweeping host Milligan (Tenn.) College earlier in the day.
FHU held the Lady Buffs to a zero percent attack rating while out-blocking its opponent 6-4. The Lady Lions were led offensively by
Nataly Gutierrez and
Fernanda Ferreira amassing nine kills apiece.
Set one was a close battle, but the Lady Buffs never came closer than two points before FHU put the game away 25-20. Set two was much closer early on as Milligan tied it at 10-10 before FHU went on a 7-0 run on its way to a 25-16 set victory. The Lady Lions then took the final set 25-15 to complete the sweep.
The final match of the tournament proved to be costly with the Lady Lions falling to the Eagles of Shorter in four sets. FHU pulled within one in the opening set before the Eagles went on a 7-0 run and took a 25-16 set win. A long volley with FHU leading 16-14 in set two ended with a kill from
Sydney Rice and vaulted the Lady Lions to a victory, 25-23. Shorter, though, took the next two sets (25-21, 25-20) to hand Freed-Hardeman its first loss of the season.
Rice and Ferreira were named to the all-tournament team.
The Lady Lions, who are receiving votes in the first national poll, have a two week break before beginning league play at Bethel (Tenn.) University on Sept. 13th.
