HENDERSON, Tenn. - Orlando Bass and Isaiah Harrison both hit big baskets as the Freed-Hardeman Lions broke a four-game losing streak with a 66-63 win over Fisk (Tenn.) University on Thursday night in the Brewer Sports Center.
With the Lions (5-5) trailing by two points inside 90 seconds to play, Bass drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing to put FHU back on top. Moments later, after a Fisk basket, Harrison made a tough shot in the post from the left block for what turned out to be the game-winning basket.
The Bulldogs had a chance at the final possession twice. After Harrison's basket, Brandyn Mungo turned the ball over with 21 seconds left. Damion Wooten made one of two free throws with 12 seconds to play, giving Fisk another chance to tie or win. This time, Mungo got to the basket but missed a layup in traffic and Harrison cleared the rebound to seal the win.
It was a back-and-forth game that saw FHU lead for much of the night, but the Bulldogs stayed close enough to make a pair of late runs that gave them brief leads.
FHU went up by 10 points with 12 minutes left after a basket by Chandler Mack, but Fisk responded with a 13-2 run to take a 49-48 lead five minutes later.
The Lions retook the lead after a 3-pointer by Verkeneo Mann and an alley-oop dunk by Mack. However, the Bulldogs followed with back-to-back 3-pointers by Jewaun Wynn to go back ahead by one with 1:39 to play.
Bass followed with his clutch 3-pointer to set up the final minute's dramatics.
Harrison came off the bench to post his first career double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Bass added 17 points while Verkeneo Mann had 10. The Lions shot only 37 percent from the field but out-rebounded Fisk, 50-23, and had 30 offensive rebounds.
FHU returns to action on Friday hosting Tougaloo (Miss.) College at 8:00 PM.
