Box Score 2 HENDERSON, Tenn. - Andy Southard tossed a two-hitter in the finale of a four-game series against Indiana Tech, helping the Freed-Hardeman Lions split the series.
After splitting a double-header on Saturday, FHU dropped the first game of Sunday's twinbill, 6-4, before winning the final game, 9-1.
The Lions (8-6) never led in the first game as ITT scored twice in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead.
Evan Mansell and
Jesse Hykes both had sacrifice flies in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit in half.
Indiana Tech got those two runs back by scoring in the fifth and sixth innings. FHU responded with a run in the sixth and, after Hykes' solo home run in the seventh, had the winning run at the plate with two outs, but
Kyle Dearing popped out to third to end the game.
In game two, the Lions did all of their damage in the second inning, scoring nine runs on five hits. Eight of those runs came with two outs as Hykes,
Justin Mackey and
Kirkland Wheeler all had run-scoring hits.
It was more than enough for Southard (4-0), who allowed one unearned run in the first inning. He retired the last eight batters he faced.
Freed-Hardeman travels to LeMoyne-Owen (Tenn.) College on Tuesday for a double-header.
