Box Score 2 HENDERSON, Tenn. - Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University scored two times in the top of the ninth inning and Codi Webb stranded the tying run at second base as TNU took the first of a three-game series with No. 18 Freed-Hardeman, 8-7.
TNU jumped ahead early, doing what few teams have done all year by getting to Lion starter
Andy Southard. The Trojans scored three in the first and two in the second, chasing Southard after 1.2 innings.
Drew Suttles and
Daniel Wallace were both effective in relief, combining to hold TNU scoreless over the next five innings. Meanwhile, the Lions got two runs in the second and took the lead with a four-run seventh.
Both teams scored a run in the eighth to give the Lions a 7-6 lead going into the last inning. But TNU got two runs in the ninth off of closer
Amos Bingham and had a third gunned down at home by
Tyler Wilson after a two-out single.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Jesse Hykes drew a two-out walk and
Kirkland Wheeler followed with a single, but Webb retired
Joe Mike to end the game.
Wheeler and
Robert Prieto each had two hits for the Lions (25-15, 11-5). FHU still holds a 1.5 game lead in the conference standings despite the loss.
The series concludes with a double-header on Saturday beginning at noon.
