Lady Lions fall in tight match with Trevecca

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In a tight match that saw two sets go to extra points, a young Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion volleyball team came up a little short in both of those sets in a 3-1 loss to Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University on Thursday night.

TNU (4-0) took narrow wins in the second and fourth sets, both of which went deep into extra points (32-30, 30-28), and those turned out to be the difference.

After dropping the first set 25-19, the Lady Lions (1-1) got to set point at 24-21 following a Trevecca service error. But the Trojans rolled off points in the next four rallies before a kill by Fernanda Ferreira kept FHU alive.

The two teams traded points for the next several rallies with Freed-Hardeman getting to set point five more times but being unable to close it out. TNU finally pulled away by taking the last three points of the set, two of which came as the result of FHU errors.

The Lady Lions again held the lead for the majority of the third set, getting to 24-20 before TNU again made it interesting. The Trojans took three consecutive points but a kill by Ferreira followed to give FHU the set win.

The fourth set was tightly contested, though Freed-Hardeman held a 19-15 edge at one point. TNU closed the gap to 22-22, and then held off two set points for FHU. The Lady Lions did the same after the Trojans took control, staying alive on a trio of TNU set points but couldn't make it four as a service ace by Allison Boe ended the match.

"We did not have our best game tonight," said FHU head coach Todd Humphry. "Our ball control really hurt us and we did not take advantage of some opportunities that would have changed the match. We will regroup and prepare for the weekend."

Ferreira led the Lady Lion attack with 17 kills while freshman Allie Moss had 12 in 25 attempts. Fellow freshmen Kara England and Amanda Cunningham each had seven kills.

Rachel Jetton set a new career high with 40 assists; Ferreira and Callie West paced the defense with 15 digs each.

FHU begins play in the Faulkner (Ala.) University Invitational tomorrow.
