Lady Lions see big lead disappear in first loss of the season

Box Score

POINT LOOKOUT, Ark. - With just under seven minutes to play, the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions looked to be firmly in control on the road against NAIA D-II No. 4 College of the Ozarks (Ark.).

FHU led 58-40 after a basket by Maria Bagwell, fending off a rally by the Bobcats that pulled them within 12 points.

But then things took a serious turn for the worse, and it led the the first loss of the season for the No. 2 Lady Lions.

COFO nailed three 3-pointers in the final minute of regulation, the final one a buzzer-beater, to complete a huge comeback that sent the game to overtime tied at 66.

In overtime, FHU's struggles continued. Natalie Shumpert missed a shot in the lane with a chance to tie the game with 15 seconds left, and Emily Walker made a pair of free throws to make it a two-possession game.

Brittany Montgomery gave the Lady Lions (13-1) some hope with her fifth 3-pointer of the game with 6.1 seconds left to pull FHU within one point, but Walker knocked down two more free throws with 4.2 seconds and Freed-Hardeman was unable to get a shot off before time expired.

FHU got off to a good start, leading 36-17 at half and scored the first points of the second half to take a 21-point lead. The Bobcats (13-2) rallied to get within 12 points before Montgomery nailed a pair of 3's and Bagwell's layup pushed the lead back to 18 points with 6:50 left.

But the Lady Lions made just 2-of-7 from the floor during the remainder of regulation and more importantly went only 3-of-8 from the line including three straight missed to close the second half.

Those misses allow COFO (13-2) to stay close enough to force overtime, where the Lady Lions wouldn't lead after another Bobcat 3-pointer by Walker to open the extra period.

Montgomery led all scorers with 19 points while Bagwell posted a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Ashley Tate and Amber Alexander each had 10 points. COFO, which shot 24.1 percent in the first half, warmed up considerably after the break to shoot 51.4 percent the rest of the way.

FHU wraps up the classic tomorrow against Ecclesia (Ark.) College at 3:30 PM.
