Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - The season is still young, but the Freed-Hardeman Lions are making an early habit of putting games away in the second half.
The Lions shot 69.0 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes and cruised to a 90-66 win over Tougaloo (Miss.) College on Saturday afternoon.
FHU (2-0) didn't attack the Tougaloo zone by knocking down 3-pointers but rather by going inside and getting into the gaps in the defense. The approach worked well as the Lions made 33-of-47 shots from inside the arc.
Meanwhile the Bulldogs (0-5) were more content to take 3-pointers and mid-range jumpers, as the FHU defense kept them from getting to the basket. Tougaloo shot just 38.3 percent for the game and missed its last nine 3-point attempts.
Yet the Bulldogs managed to hang around early in the second half after trailing by eight at the break. A traditional 3-point play by Trevis Thomas pulled Tougaloo within seven points at the 18:26 mark before the Lions caught fire. FHU outscored the Bulldogs, 21-7, over the next 10 minutes to take a 65-44 lead, making 9-of-13 shots during the stretch.
Kyle Teichmann got it started with two straight baskets, and a balanced attack followed as five different Lions scored over the course of the run. Orlando Bass had six of those points as he scored 12 of his 14 in the second half.
The Lions led by as many as 29 points (85-56) before Tougaloo closed the final margin to 24.
Teichmann scored 17 points to lead Freed-Hardeman while Chandler Mack added 12 off the bench as twelve Lions scored in the contest.
Freed-Hardeman returns the floor on Tuesday, Nov. 19, hosting Crowley's Ridge (Ark.) College at 7:00 PM. The Student Government Association is hosting "Rave for the Lions" at the game.
