Box Score 2 LEBANON, Tenn. - After splitting four matches last weekend at the Faulkner (Ala.) Invitational, the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion volleyball squad will look to improve on that record this weekend at the 2014 Cumberland (Tenn.) Classic.
FHU (2-2) will play two matches on Friday and two on Saturday, facing host Cumberland (Tenn.) at noon on Friday and Reinhardt (Ga.) at 2:00 PM. On Saturday, the Lady Lions take on Ohio Valley (W.V.) at 9:00 AM and Fisk (Tenn.) at 1:00 PM.
It was a feast-or-famine weekend for the Lady Lions at Faulkner as they won two matches handily but were swept in three sets in their two losses. Allie Moss paced the attack with 43 total kills, an average of 3.3 per set. Kara England (1.6), Mikaela Powers (1.4) and Emma Taylor (1.4) will look to continue to add balance to the attack.
Michelle Bennett leads the team in digs at 4.3 per set and also leads the NAIA in aces per set after serving 12 total over the weekend. Powers is just behind her with eight aces. Amanda Cunningham leads the front-row defense with nine blocks while Powers has five. Emily Humphry has been the primary setter and averages 6.4 assists per set.
Under first-year head coach Brittany Harry, Cumberland is off to a solid start at 8-2 with its two losses coming against NCAA opponents. The Bulldogs feature three hitters averaging better than two kills per set in Abby Shaw (3.0), Michelle Evans (2.6) and Michelle Daniels (2.3). They have attacked at a .208 percentage thus far and have been effective defensively at the net with 47.5 total blocks.
Reinhardt comes into the tournament with a record of 1-2. Ally Hurd leads the Eagle attack with 2.3 kills per set. An NCAA D-II member, Ohio Valley College (0-4) enters the event looking for its first win of the season. FHU wraps up with Fisk (3-6), who is led by Alexis Emmanuel's 3.0 kills per set.
