Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - Being at home makes a big difference sometimes.
That definitely seemed to be the case for the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions on Thursday night in their home opener as they played a complete match on their way to a 3-0 win over Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) by scores of 25-11, 25-9 and 25-9.
The match was played in front of one of the largest crowds in recent years at a volleyball match, and the energy it provided made a difference.
"It's awesome. It really motivates you," said FHU junior Allie Moss. "It gets me going and makes me want to put the ball down even harder."
Moss did exactly that tonight, and she did it a lot with 18 kills in only 23 attempts.
The outcome of any of the sets was hardly in question as FHU raced out to big leads early. A run of eight straight points gave the Lady Lions a 13-1 lead in the first set, then two six-point runs gave them a 12-3 lead in set two. But both of those runs paled in comparison to the third set, which saw FHU (5-5, 1-0) roll off 10 unanswered points to begin.
The Lady Lions were very efficient at the net, hitting .469 and making only seven attack errors and 12 for the entire match.
Kara England added eight kills while Kiyla Glasper had four, all in the third set. Emily Humphry had 20 assists while Sara Denton had 14.
TURNING POINTS: FHU took control from the get-go in all three sets and never gave the Hornets a chance to get into the match. Allie Moss was dominant from the start with eight kills in the first set, and Kiyla Glasper was dominant at the end with four kills and a block late in the third set.
NOTES: Allie Moss's previous high for kills in a three-set match was 15, coming against Reinhardt (Ga.) on Sept. 12...Michelle Bennett had three more aces, bringing her season total to 26. She led the team last year with 45...The Lady Lions have won eight of their last nine home-openers...Tabatha Peace tied her career-high in digs with 10.
QUOTES: Allie Moss | Coach Todd Humphry
WHAT'S NEXT: The Lady Lion face a stiff test tomorrow against No. 20 Missouri Baptist at 4:00 PM. The Spartans are 11-1 and coming off their first loss of the season to NCAA Division II Quincy (Ma.) College.
