Lady Lions hold No. 1 spot in latest NAIA national rankings

Box Score

KANSAS CITY - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions stayed in the top spot in the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Coaches Poll on Tuesday, Jan. 6, taking nine of 10 first-place votes.

The Lady Lions (13-1) totalled 250 points in the poll with defending national champion Oklahoma City taking the lone remaining first-place vote.

The No. 1 rating is FHU's ninth all-time, putting the program on the verge of becoming only the fifth school in NAIA history to be ranked in the top spot 10 or more times. Former conference rival Union (Tenn.) University - now a member of NCAA Division II - has the most all-time No. 1 rankings with 53.

Freed-Hardeman boasts four wins this season over teams represented in this week's poll - two over No. 8 Bethel (Tenn.) and one each over No. 13 Cumberland (Tenn.) and No. 23 Columbia (Mo.). Columbia, along with No. 20 Lyon (Ark.), are the other American Midwest Conference teams in the top 25.
