SETTING THE STAGE
No. 2 Freed-Hardeman (24-2, 19-1) clinched the regular-season conference championship on Thursday and now will attempt to defend its high national ranking before conference tournament begins next week. That may prove to be a tough task against the Eagles (15-8, 14-5), who have given the Lions fits since FHU's move to the American Midwest Conference. WBC has won six straight and sits alone in third place in the AMC.
LAST TIME THEY MET
FHU led by six with 5:28 to play, but Williams Baptist went on a 14-1 run and pulled off a 68-67 upset of then-No. 6 Freed-Hardeman on Jan. 6. Ben Meis led all scorers with 24 points while Cameron Lewis added 20 while the Lions shot a paltry 36.7 percent from the floor.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Williams Baptist has won the last two contests, but FHU still leads the all-time series, 22-7. The Lions had won six straight in the series before WBC's current two-game winning streak.
FIRST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
On Thursday, The Lions clinched the first conference championship of any kind in the program's 40-year history following a 73-36 win over Lyon (Ark.). FHU sealed the regular-season conference title and home-court advantage through the upcoming conference tournament. It also earns FHU an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament, making its fifth trip in program history.
FOUR SCORE
FHU has thrived off a "big three" all season with Cameron Lewis (17.8 ppg), Evan Forhetz (14.3 ppg) and Ben Meis (13.4 ppg) providing the majority of the offense. But now Isaiah Harrison has given the Lions a fourth double-digit scorer since returning in January. The 6-foot-8 junior has upped his average to 10.8 points per game while also grabbing 7.8 rebounds per game. He's also shooting 61.5 percent from the field.
ROAD TO 200
FHU head coach Jason Shelton is closing in on his 200th career win, entering tonight's game with 196 in his 10 years at Freed-Hardeman. His career winning percentage of .607 is the best in men's program history. He would be only the second coach in Lion history to reach 200 career wins.
STILL RISING
For the fourth week in a row, the Lions moved up one spot in the NAIA national rankings. Last week, FHU climbed to No. 2 marking the program's highest ranking since reaching No. 1 on Jan. 28, 2014. Freed-Hardeman has been ranked in the top 10 in 18 of the last 19 polls. The new poll comes out tomorrow.
RHYMES WITH THREES
After making four 3-pointers on Thursday, senior Ben Meis has made 78 for the season. It's currently tied for the 10th-most 3-pointers made in a season in FHU history. The single-season record is 109, held by Nathan Aaron.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Winners of six straight, Williams Baptist has climbed into third place in the AMC standings. The Eagles scored an important win on Saturday over Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) and can essentially wrap up the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. James McClain is one of the most dangerous scorers in conference, averaging 17.1 points per game. He's tough to stop off the dribble. Tevin Howard (14.7 ppg) and Abel Yekeh (11.7 ppg) provide balance to the offense.
