CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - The Freed-Hardeman men's basketball team kept things close the entire first half Tuesday evening on the road at Campbellsville University, but could not hold off the Tigers in the second half and were sent home with their third loss of the season.
Despite the loss, the Lions (1-3) received solid contribution from Senior Marcus Baldwin, who surpassed 30 points for a second straight game and ended the night with 34 points after going 5-for-6 from behind the arc and 14-for-19 from the field. Kortland Martin and Simon Fransis also reached double digits in the match-up for the Lions, as each chipped in 11 points in the loss.
Shawn Johnson led Campbellsville (5-1) on the offensive end with 19 points after shooting an impressive 6-for-9 from the field and 4-for-6 from behind the arc. Adam Stanford followed close behind with 18 points of his own after shooting 7-for-10 from the field. Two other Tiger players reached double digits in the match-up, as Tyler Hagen put up 14 points while Jalen Coates chipped in 12 points in the win.
The Tigers started the game hot and jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, courtesy of a three-point field goal by Tim Coleman followed by an Adam Stanford jump shot to give Campbellsville some separation early. However, the Lions would not led the game slip away, as Marcus Baldwin and Kortland Martin responded with back-to-back three pointers to give FHU their first lead of the game at the 6-5 mark.
From there, both teams kept things tight for the remainder of the frame, as the first half saw five ties and three lead changes. The Lions reached their largest lead of the half at the 43-37 mark with 1:13 remaining in the frame. However, Campbellsville would not let the Lions take things over, as they responded with a 5-0 run of their own to diminish FHU's lead to one at the 43-42 mark entering the break.
The momentum continued for the Tigers in the second half, as they out-shot the Lions 16-7 in the opening five minutes of the frame and jumped out to an eight point lead at the 58-50 mark. From there, Campbellsville would not leave the door open for an FHU comeback, as they reached their largest lead of the game at the 87-75 mark on their way to a 90-80 victory.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 1-3 on the season. Campbellsville University improves to 5-1 on the season with the win.
