WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. - Freshman guard Kortland Martin posted a career-high 25 points while Marcus Baldwin chipped in 25 of his own Tuesday evening, as the Freed-Hardeman Lion basketball team picked up a much needed 92-88 victory on the road over Williams Baptist College in Walnut Ridge, Ark.
Martin, who posted a 20-point game Saturday evening against Central Baptist College, picked up right where he left off and went 6-for-7 from behind the arc and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe to seal it for the Lions down the stretch. Baldwin also continued his impressive start to the 2017-18 season, as he surpassed 20 points for the seventh time this season after going a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the arc and 10-for-11 from the field.
Shamir Rolle and John Musselwhite also contributed nicely to the FHU attack, as Rolle ended the night with nine points and seven rebounds while Musselwhite added to the three point fire show and went 3-for-6 from behind the arc to end the night with nine points.
The Lions (5-10, 2-6 AMC) shot an impressive 58 percent from the field and 70 percent from behind the arc compared to Williams Baptist (7-5, 3-4 AMC), who shot 44 percent from the field and 46 percent from behind the arc in the loss.
The match-up was tight from the opening tip, as the first half saw four ties and five lead changes. The Lions trailed by as many as seven points at the 15-8 mark with 14 minutes remaining in the half, however, a 12-5 run over the next four minutes changed things in a hurry and evened things up at 20 apiece with 10 minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
The momentum continued for the Lions from there, as they out-shot the Eagles 22-14 over the next eight minutes to reach their largest lead of the half at the 42-34 mark with just over two minutes remaining in the opening stanza. From there, the Lions traded baskets with the Eagles to close the half with a 46-40 lead entering the break.
The momentum continued for the Lions in the second half, as they out-shot the Eagles 18-15 in the opening six minutes of the frame to reach their largest lead of the game at the 64-55 mark with 14 minutes remaining in regulation.
However, the Eagles would not go down without a fight, as they responded with a scoring run of their own and out-shot the Lions 17-8 over the next seven minutes to even things up a 72 apiece with 7:51 remaining in regulation. From there, the Lions never led by more than four points the remainder of the way, but were able to hold on to secure the 92-88 victory on the road.
With the win, the Lions move to 5-10 on the season and 2-6 in conference play. Williams Baptist falls to 7-5 on the season and 3-4 in AMC play with the loss.
