ST. LOUIS, Mo. - FHU Freshman Kortland Martin posted a career-high 27 points Saturday afternoon, as the Freed-Hardeman Lion basketball team dominated on the road with a 92-68 victory over St. Louis College of Pharmacy in St. Louis, Mo.
The 27-point performance marked the third time in the last four games Martin has reached the 20-point milestone, as he has averaged 20.25 points per game throughout the last four match-ups, including a 25-point performance in Tuesday's victory over Williams Baptist College.
Martin continued his hot shooting Saturday and fired in an impressive 10-for-13 from the field and 5-for-8 from behind the arc to go along with three assists in the victory.
Martin; however, was not the only FHU player to reach double figures, as Marcus Baldwin followed close behind with 22 points while James Davis fired in 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Simon Fransis rounded out the scoring for FHU with 10 points and six rebounds in the win.
The Lions (6-11, 3-7 AMC) shot an impressive 50 percent from the field in the match-up compared to St. Louis College of Pharmacy (0-12, 0-9 AMC) who kept pace and shot 47 percent from the field and 43 percent from behind the arc in the loss.
Despite the loss, the Eutectics also had four players reach double figures in the match-up, led by Ilias Kalogeropoulos, who fired in 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field. Colton Frazer and Caleb Gulick followed close behind, each with 11 points while Anthony Vallejo rounded out the scoring for St. Louis College of Pharmacy with 10 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
The Lions struggled to pull away in the early going, as both teams came out aggressive on the offensive end. The first half saw two ties and four lead changes with St. Louis College of Pharmacy leading by as many as five points at the 21-16 mark with nine minutes remaining in the frame.
The Lions; however, would not let things get out of hand, as they followed suit and led by as many as five at the 31-26 mark and finished the half strong with a 40-36 lead entering the break.
The second half; however, was a different story, as the Lions opened the frame with authority and out-shot the Eutectics 27-13 in the opening ten minutes to take a comfortable 67-49 lead midway through the half.
The momentum continued for FHU in the final ten minutes, as they reached their largest lead of the game at the 90-65 mark with 1:48 remaining in regulation on their way to a 92-68 victory.
With the win, the Lions move to 6-11 on the season and 3-7 in conference play. The Eutectics fall to 0-12 on the season and 0-9 in AMC play with the loss.
