HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Basketball teams made it look easy Saturday in their Homecoming match-up against Welch College, as the Lady Lions picked up a 106-33 victory while the men's team secured an 87-60 win at the Brewer Sports Center.
In addition to the Homecoming Basketball games, the Lady Lions were presented with their National Championship rings at the conclusion of the women's game while the FHU Softball and Baseball teams were presented with their post-season rings during Halftime of the men's game.
In the opening game of the day, the Lady Lions continued to roll to start the 2018-19 season, as five players reached double figures in the 106-33 victory. Sandrea Sylman led the charge for FHU, as she chipped in 16 points while Haylee Croom followed close behind with 15 points and eight rebounds. Rebecca Hammond and Jamie Crum also reached double figures with 14 points apiece while Tatum Russell chipped in 10 points off the bench.
The Lady Lions (3-0) also dominated on the defensive side of the floor, as they forced an impressive 22 turnovers and snagged 17 steals in the win. Chynia Brooks and Haylee Croom led the Lady Lions on the defensive end, as Brooks snagged four steals while Croom recorded three steals in the win.
FHU dominated the game from the opening tip, as they limited Welch College (0-5) to just 12 points in the first half to take a comfortable 58-12 lead entering the break.
The momentum continued for the Lady Lions in the second half, as they reached their largest lead of the game at the 102-26 mark with 3:42 remaining in regulation on their way to a 106-33 victory.
With the win, the Lady Lions improve to 3-0 on the season. Welch College falls to 0-5 on the season with the loss.
Meanwhile in the men's match-up, the Lions cruised to an 87-60 victory after shooting an impressive 54 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc.
Bryan Mitchell led the charge for the Lions (1-2), as he fired in 24 points while Francis Agbata chipped in 16 points. John Musselwhite fired in 12 points for FHU on a 3-for-4 shooting night from behind the arc while James Davis recorded a double-double in the match-up with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win.
Welch College kept things close for a majority of the first half, as the Lions held just a five point advantage at the 37-32 mark entering the break. However, despite holding a slight margin at halftime, the Lions kicked it in high gear in the second half, as they out-shot the Flames 50-28 on 61 percent shooting to pick up a convincing 87-60 victory.
With the win, the Lions move to 1-2 on the season. Welch College falls to 0-4 on the season with the loss.
UP NEXT: The Freed-Hardeman Basketball teams are back in action Thursday, November 15th, as they open conference play on the road at Lindenwood University-Belleville. The Lady Lions get things started first at 5:30 PM followed by the men's game at 7:30 PM in Belleville, Ill.
