ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Freed-Hardeman Men's Basketball team suffered a 67-61 loss to Harris-Stowe State University Saturday afternoon in their conference opener in St. Louis, Mo.
Despite the loss, the Lions (1-3, 0-1 AMC) had three players reach double figures, led by John Musselwhite, who fired in 14 points after shooting 6-for-13 from the field and 2-for-7 from behind the arc. Bryan Mitchell and Jalen Thompson followed close behind, as each chipped in 10 points in the loss.
Francis Agbata also played solid for the Lions, as he chipped in 7 points and pulled down nine rebounds while Silas Clark pulled down eight rebounds and dished out four assists. The Lions also won the battle on the glass in the match-up, as they out-rebounded the Hornets 58-33, led by Agbata's nine rebounds.
Devonte Lash led Harris-Stowe on the attack, as he fired in 19 points while Bear Clarkson and Nate Rigmaiden followed close behind, each with 10 points. Duane Clark led the Hornets on the glass, as he pulled down eight rebounds in the win.
The Lions kept things close for a majority of the opening stanza, as the first half saw two ties and four lead changes with FHU's largest lead being six points at the 21-15 mark with nine minutes remaining in the half. However, despite having a slight cushion midway through the first half, the Hornets (5-0, 1-0 AMC) out-shot FHU 18-5 to close the half with a 33-26 lead entering the break.
The Hornets kept things rolling in the second half, as they extended their lead to as many as 21 points at the 50-29 mark with 12 minutes remaining in regulation. The Lions; however, would not go down without a fight, as they closed the gap to four points at the 65-61 mark with under a minute remaining in regulation. However, despite the late comeback, the Hornets were able to convert at the free throw line to send FHU home with the 67-61 loss.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 1-3 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. Harris-Stowe State University improves to 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in AMC play with the win.
