HENDERSON, Tenn. – The Freed-Hardeman University women's basketball team (7-9,1-8 MSC) fell to No. 4 Thomas More University (14-0, 9-0 MSC) 62-59 on Thursday night at home after a three-game road trip.
To start the game, Thomas More got out to an early 7-0 lead to gain control early. The Saints would lead 16-9 before the Lady Lions would go on a 10-3 run to take the lead at 19-18 in the second quarter. The team would lead by as many as seven before the Saints would notch a 10-0 to close the half with a 33-30 lead.
To start the second half, the Saints picked up right where they left off, scoring the first nine points after the break to extend their lead to 12 points. The teams would trade baskets until the Lady Lions notched a 12-2 run to cut into the Saints lead and tie the game at 59 in the fourth quarter.
With the game tied at 59 with under a minute remaining, the Saints went one-of-two at the foul line to regain a one-point advantage. After an empty possession by the Lady Lions, they were forced to foul with 28.9 seconds remaining, and again the Saints split the free-throws at the charity stripe to stretch their lead to two points.
The Saints got another defensive stand with 13.4 seconds left as the Lady Lions still had fouls to give. The Saints went back to the charity stripe with 9.4 seconds left, and once again split the free-throws to stretch their lead to three points. After the missed free-throw the Saints utilized their two fouls they had left to give before the Lady Lions could get up a potential game-tying three-point shot. With 4.2 seconds left, Alyssa LeMay would advance the ball past half-court and attempt a game-tying three-point shot from just below half-court which would come up just short as time expired.
The Lady Lions were led in scoring by LeMay, who notched a 21-point, seven rebound performance. Caroline Chambers had a stellar performance with 19 points and six rebounds to round out the double-figure scorers.
The Lady Lions will continue their six-game home stand on Saturday against No. 9 Shawnee State on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Brewer Sports Center.
